I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I was hard pressed to stop at the end of each chapter because I wanted to know what happened next in the life of this incredibly interesting and complex female character. The writing was fresh and vibrant and kept me hooked. A lot of the chapters left me wanting to know even more details about this girl and her life, and I was actually sad when the book ended. One of the few books I've picked up recently that I just found difficult to put down.Product details

STOP THAT GIRL A NOVEL IN STORIES, is an unusual read. Most novels have a distinctive flow to them, following characters through their minute lives moment by moment. This book changes that structure by utilizing a collection of short stories, but telling each story about the same life through the main character, Ann Ransom. Although this can be engaging and make the material feel original, it also creates some problems.
But lets get into the positives first ...
Author Elizabeth McKenzie pulls us into a unique family - that of an initially young Ann Ransom's - and does so with wit, charm, and a fluid prose that many writers would find enviable. The pages fairly whip by during the first 3/4 of the novel and you laugh, cringe, and generally feel like a Peeping-Tom. I say "Peeping-Tom" because every intimate detail of these people's lives comes spilling off the pages, whether the reader wants that information or not. From learning about Dr. Frost (Ann's grandmother) and her overbearing personality that tears at the fabric of every relationship in the book, to Ann's attempts to distance herself from her family by any means possible - including driving 90 mph through the fog while an interview with the famous poet Allen Ginsberg takes place in the back seat, something that's both funny and poignant - STOP THAT GIRL delivers a coarse set of narratives that makes for enjoyable reading.
Where the novel broke down for me was toward the end. It felt terribly rushed as prime characters vanished from the pages and other monumental things happened but were glossed over with the barest of acknowledgments (Mother and Grandmother die; Ann gets married; A child is born, etc.). Perhaps the patching together of the short stories here needed a bit more work to make the ending flow smoothly.
It was a fun read, but it just could've been even more enjoyable if the final pages had a bit more cohesiveness when compared with the rest of the book.
This is an Breakout Book for 2005, and once again, the editors do not disappoint with their selections. It's a quick read comprised of snapshots of narrator Ann Ransom's life as she grows from grade school through college.
The book starts out with a bang, as the spunky and self-centered grade-school age Ann deals with her mother's new boyfriend, losing her only child status, her manipulative and insane Grandmother, and an annoying schoolmate/neighbor. I enjoyed seeing Ann grow, and she's no angel, just a girl trying to find her place in the world and deal with the people around her.
I'm only giving the book 4 stars because I felt it kind of wandered at the end, and I didn't feel complete when I finished the book. Author McKenzie portrays a psychotic grandmother, but the scenes with her are so brief that the reader barely gets to make up his or her mind based on evidence. I almost felt as if the author used this "novel in short stories" gimmick to get out of having to fully develop some of the characters.
Overall, this is a great book, and each chapter is a vivid portrait of the events which shaped Ann as she grew up. I highly recommend this breakout book from a new talent in fiction.
My professor asked me to add this book to my reading list and I'm glad she did. The stories are very well crafted and McKenzie is skillful with her description of scene and use of details. I like her female protagonist, too. An enjoyable read.
Best book I have read in a while. I was totally captivated! It kept my interest and there was a surprise at the end!
I was looking forward to a fun, light read. Instead I got a depressing memoir. I know it was not 100% about the author but you wonder which parts were "changed". Don't read this book if you're looking for laughs. It really isn't funny...
Incredible read! Finished in one sitting and then set out to re-read the story. I'm still mulling it over, and probably will for some time following. Can't agree on what the heroine's life looks like after the misses and misfortunes of her life look like, or mine for that matter.
I really enjoyed the first half of the book but felt that the second half and ending were rushed. The author seemed to just skip through what appeared to be major story-telling moments in the main characters' adult life. The book felt like it had a whole lot of beginning, a little middle, and barely any end.
